BAKU, June 29 (Hina) - The closing ceremony of the inaugural European Games in Azerbaijan was held in Baku on Sunday, and during 16 days of the Games, 6,000 athletes from 50 countries, including 106 Croatians took part in contests, and Croatians won 11 medals.

Of those 11 medals, one was gold captured by karate competitor Masa Martinovic, who was victorious in the women's +68kg kumite. The other ten medals were four silvers and six bronzes.

The most successful nation in the Games was the Russian Federation with 79 gold medals, 40 silvers and 45 bronzes.

Patrick Hickey, president of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), commended the organisation of the games, telling a news conference on Sunday that "They're well capable of hosting an Olympic Games,"

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev's wife Mehriban Arif qizi Aliyeva, who is the chairwoman of the European Games organising committee said at the closing ceremony that the Games were the victory of the independent Azerbaijan.

The second edition of the European Games are to be held in 2019. It is still unknown who will be the next host, given that the Netherlands pulled out of hosting the 2019 edition days before the opening ceremony in Baku because the Dutch government decided it would be a financial burden.
