EU: Reduction in road death toll slowing down

ZAGREB, June 18 (Hina) - A preliminary report on road safety in 2014 released by the European Commission indicates a significantly lower reduction of the number of road fatalities in European Union member states while Croatia's traffic-related death rate contracted significantly.

Around one percent fewer people were killed on the road in 2014 compared to 2013, and compared with 2010 that is 18% down which means that a target of 50% fewer road deaths by 2020 will not be achieved, the Interior Ministry reported on its web site on Thursday.

Some EU countries, for example Slovakia, Latvia and Bulgaria, registered more road deaths in 2014 than in 2013 while in some countries the number of deaths was up to 15% lower such as Finland, Slovenia and Croatia.

The Interior Ministry underscored that Croatia's death road toll was below the EU average with regard to the number of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists killed on the road and that Croatia recorded the highest reduction of road deaths in the period 2010 - 2014.
