Croatia fruit growers, hit by Russian embargo, compensated EUR 2.78M

ZAGREB, June 3 (Hina) - Croatian mandarin and apple growers, who donated their agricultural produce which they could not sell on the Russian market due to an embargo on the import of products from EU, have been granted 20.8 million kuna as compensation by the national Paying Agency for Agriculture.

The agency stated on Wednesday that 121 farmers had donated nearly 3.9 thousand tonnes of apples and have been compensated HRK 12 million, while 166 mandarin growers have been given 8.8 million kuna for having donated 2.3 thousand tonnes of mandarins.

The apples and mandarins withdrawn from the market were given to social welfare centres, pre-school institutions, primary and secondary schools, hospitals, prisons and humanitarian organisations.

The compensation measure was envisaged as emergency aid for EU member-states' farmers hit by the Russian embargo,
