Zagreb has the largest model railway in S-E Europe

ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - The largest model railway in Southeast Europe was presented in Zagreb this past Wednesday after four years of dedicated work by five Zagreb train lovers to create the handcrafted model.

The model is specific because its height ranges from -10 centimeters to three meters, which puts it at the top of European model-making. A part of the model railway is dug ten centimeters underground representing an underground metro. The railway consists of 1,015 meters of tracks and 300 meters of motorways, a press conference was told.

"I've always loved trains and I can tell you that building this model was the continuation of a childhood love," Antun Urbic Backo explained why he built the model named the Backo Mini Express.

As many as 80 trains run along tracks covering 75 square meters, including freight trains which cost 100-300 euros on average. The model includes travelling motor vehicles, the odd bicycle, fire trucks, police cars and lorries and much more.

The model is operated by computers that control all mobile components and make sure that not one train is running late.

Marin Benkus was responsible for the landscaping, tending to the smallest details, with 1,200 trees, 600 houses, and 500 figurines, some of which are mobile.

The model's creators underscored that model railways were an interesting attraction. Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg is one of the largest such models in the world.

The five enthusiasts added that work on the Backo Mini Express was not over and that the model was constantly being adapted, adding that the five-man team consisting of Antun Urbic Backo, Domagoj Terzic, Zelimir Matocec, Marin Benkus and Matija Bulat worked on it from 9am to 5pm each day.

The Backo Mini Express has been included in the Zagreb Tourism Board's information brochure.
