Serbia: Nikolic travels to Moscow, Dacic cancels trip to Kiev

BELGRADE, May 8 (Hina) - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic left for Moscow on Friday morning for a two-day visit to the Russian Federation to attend a Victory Day parade on Saturday, which will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory over fascism, while Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic has cancelled his attendance at a Remembrance and Reconciliation Day ceremony in Ukraine, due on Friday.

Ukraine has changed the format of the celebration of the victory over fascism from political to diplomatic, so Serbia will be represented by its ambassador to Kiev, Rade Bulatovic, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

In a telephone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, Dacic has confirmed their earlier arrangement for him to visit Ukraine in June in his capacity as the chairman of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Western countries are boycotting this year's May 9 Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, accusing Russia of involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. On the other hand, Ukraine, just like Poland, is trying to distance itself from Russia by moving the date commemorating the end of World War II to May 8 when the anniversary is marked by most Western countries.
