Split beaches freed of garbage during Green Cleanup drive

SPLIT, April 18 (Hina) - A volunteer action to clean up the coastal part of the biggest Croatian Adriatic city of Split was conducted on Saturday, on the occasion of this year's Green Cleanup drive ahead of Earth Day observed on 22 April.

Volunteers from local nongovernmental associations and war veterans' societies removed waste from local beaches and bays, with divers cleaning the seabed. Divers removed plastic bottles, tyres, car wrecks and other things discarded by insensitive residents.

One of activists told Hina that "you can find in the sea all what people no longer need".

This year's Green Cleanup drive, during which volunteers cleared illegally disposed-of waste in Croatia, was held on Saturday, April 18, in several towns while the action in some places was postponed for next Saturday, due to inclement weather.

The day-long drive is being organised for the fourth year in a row as part of the World Cleanup campaign and the global movement "Let's Do It!" Its aim is to raise awareness of the importance of responsible waste management for the purpose of environmental protection.
