Work on "Walter Defends Sarajevo" remake starts

ZAGREB, March 29 (Hina) - Work on a remake of the film "Walter Defends Sarajevo" will start this year after auditions are held for actors in late May and the actor is chosen for the role of Walter, played by Velimir Bata Zivojinovic in the 1972 original directed by Hajrudin Krvavac, said Vinko Grubisic, CEO of Jadran Film, the Croatian production company in charge of the project which also includes partners from China, as well as other former Yugoslav countries, Australia and Germany.

The remake will be made in two versions and as a television series, Grubisic told Hina, recalling that the original was a classic that had sensational success in China.

After years of preparation and talks with foreign partners, the project to make a remake of the movie has entered its final stage.

Grubisic said the remake will be filmed in authentic locations in Sarajevo and in Jadran Film's studios in Zagreb.

The audition for actors will be open to all actors from the former Yugoslavia.

In his previous comments on the project, Grubisic said that a motive for making the remake was the restoration of "the values we like."

"I personally like films about the mythological battle of good and evil. I primarily had that in mind but I was also thinking about the title of a book saying that small nations must be careful with great ideas. In every time and every occurrence people must be able to distinguish between good and evil, as shown clearly in the film 'Walter Defends Sarajevo'. That is what makes it a great film and it is not by accident that it was the most watched film of all time exactly in China," Grubisic said, adding that most Chinese in a way identified Walter with Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito.

Asked about the perception of such identification in Croatia, Grubisic said the matter in Croatia was discussed from extremist and entirely wrong ideological platforms.

"I believe that none of us can change history or choose the army our grandfathers fought for. We can only wisely define the future and keep what was good in the past. The fight against those who killed civilians and tried to annihilate entire ethnic groups in concentration camps was definitely a fight of good against evil," said Grubisic.

Walter Defends Sarajevo is a romanticised story about the anti-fascist movement in Sarajevo during the city's occupation in World War II and about Vladimir Peric Valter, the legend of the resistance movement. It was the most watched film of all time in China and according to some estimates, it was seen by close to one billion people.
