Albanian president says Balkan countries should take Montenegro, Croatia as model

PODGORICA, March 23 (Hina) - Montenegro is a step ahead of Albania in terms of integration with the European Union and the Croatian and Montenegrin models are examples that should be followed by Balkan countries, Albanian President Bujar Nishani said in Podgorica on Monday, the first day of his two-day official visit to Montenegro.

Speaking to the press after talks with his host, Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic, Nishani said that to Albanians, Montenegro was not only a neighbouring but a friendly country as well.

He said Albania and Montenegro shared common goals and values, praising Montenegro's model of integration with the EU.

Montenegro is one step ahead of Albania when it comes to EU integration and I have told President Vujanovic that the Croatian and Montenegrin models are examples that should be followed by the Balkan countries. Albania, as a NATO member, fully supports Montenegro's NATO membership bid, which will increase regional stability, said Nishani.

Vujanovic said that there were no outstanding issues in relations between the two countries and that his talks with Nishani focused on cooperation in various areas, notably the economy.

He said that Montenegro was willing to share its experience from its EU integration process with Albania.

Both countries should support two major regional projects - a project to build an Adriatic-Ionian motorway and a project to build an Adriatic-Ionian gas pipeline, said Vujanovic.

The Albanian head of state was also expected to meet with Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic.
