Croatia No.3 in EU with share of non-resident tourists

ZAGREB, Feb 1 (Hina) - Croatia is amongst the top European Union countries according to non-resident tourist nights in tourist accommodation establishments in 2014 alongside Malta and Cyprus, shows a report released by Eurostat last Thursday.

Last year, the share of non-resident tourist nights in Croatia was 92 per cent, while the top two EU members were Malta, 96%, and Cyprus, 94%.

The lowest share of non-resident tourist nights in tourist accommodation was recorded in Romania, 18%, followed by Poland, 19%, and Germany, 20%.

An average of 44% accounted for nights spent by non-residents in 2014 in tourist accommodation establishments in the 28-strong European Union.

The most non-resident tourist nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the EU in 2014 was recorded in Spain with 260 million or one-fifth of those nights in the EU, followed by Italy with 184 million or 15%.

According to Eurostat, Croatia recorded 61 million non-resident tourist night of a total of 66.1 million overall tourist nights in tourist accommodation. This is an increase of 2.8% year on year with a significantly milder increase in domestic nights of 0.6%. Overall Croatia recorded an increase of 2.6% year on year.

Tourism in the EU has reached a new record level of 2.7 billion tourism nights both domestic and non-resident tourists in tourist accommodation, up by 1.7% compared with 2013. Following the decline observed in 2009 with the beginning of the financial crisis, there has been a steady increase in the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the EU over the last 5 years.

In 2014, the most tourist nights - non-resident and domestic - was recorded in France, 403 million nights, followed by Spain, 401 million, Italy, 370 million and Germany, 366 million.
