Government proposes granting concession for Kupari beach

ZAGREB, Jan 15 (Hina) - The Croatian government sent to Parliament on Thursday its proposal to grant a concession for the construction and commercial use of a beach as part of the Kupari tourism development project.

The proposal was sent to Parliament for approval so that binding offers could be invited for the Kupari project in the Dubrovnik area. A concession would be granted for a period of 99 years.

The coastal area in question covers 79,000 square metres, including 32,500 squares metres of land and 46,300 square metres of sea, and includes a port open for public transport of local significance.

Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said that Kupari was "yet another major project that has been sitting at the bottom of the drawer for 20 years." He said that a lot of people would be hired for the project directly and many more indirectly, because it was an investment worth several hundred million euros.

The project, estimated at 200 million euros, provides for the construction and reconstruction of the Kupari hotel complex, with a capacity of up to 1,500 beds. Parliament is expected to decide on it at its first session this year. If the project is approved, a tender could be advertised next month. In the first quarter of last year, six potential investors submitted their non-binding offers.
