Croatians becoming increasingly sedentary, 65% of adults don't exercise

ZAGREB, Dec 21 (Hina) - As many as 65% of adults in Croatia exercise very rarely or hardly ever and 92% of young women over the age of 15 are insufficiently active, according to data presented by Eurobarometer at a round table, "Physical activity and health of a nation," held to mark the 55th anniversary of Zagreb's Faculty of Kinesiology.

A survey conducted by Eurobarometer in European Union member states shows that the percentage of physical inactive Croatians, 65%, is higher than the EU average of 59%.

What is particularly worrying is the prevailing sedentary lifestyle among children and teenagers, the faculty's experts said.

Lack of physical activity has been identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, after hypertension, tobacco use and diabetes.

"Physical inactivity is taking on pandemic proportions, and represents a huge problem in public health. Exercising can prevent and heal illnesses and injuries. Energy, time and money invested in physical activity are the most feasible investment into one's life," Professor Igor Jukic said.

Experts advocate the adoption of a national strategy to promote physical activity of the population.
