Number of unemployed again rises above 300,000

ZAGREB, Oct 18 (Hina) - There are currently 300,118 unemployed persons in Croatia, according to data on the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ) web site, which is the first time since mid-July that the number of job-seekers exceeds 300,000.

The number of job-seekers registered with the HZZ in late September was 290,584, which means that in slightly more than two weeks, the number of the jobless has gone up by 9,500 or 3.3%.

A trend of monthly unemployment decline that started in March stopped in September.

The number of the jobless in mid-July dropped for the first time after two years to below 300,000, mostly owing to seasonal movements in the tourism sector.

However, after a continued decline in August, the number of job-seekers in September grew by 695 persons or 0.2% on the month.

August saw the end of monthly employment growth that lasted five months, with the number of workers standing at 1.364 million, 0.4% less than at the end of July.

Analysts polled by Hina expect employment to continue declining in September and the unemployment rate to increase.

According to the national statistical office, the unemployment rate in August was 17.5%, which was the lowest level since July 2012, and analysts believe that in September it could grow to 17.7%.
