President says HDSSB's rejection of constitutional amendments makes him laugh

ZAGREB, Dec 17 (Hina) - President Ivo Josipovic said on Tuesday the rejection of draft constitutional amendments by the Croatian Democratic Party of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB) made him laugh, saying its change of heart after first agreeing to them was the result of either "trade" or a "an order from another state."

"They think they can either take in something else to make up the required majority or they received an order from another state not to betray the angry right wing. But their decision is their business," Josipovic told the press when asked to comment on the HDSSB's sudden change of heart on the constitutional amendments, whose adoption had been announced for Friday.

HDSSB president Vladimir Sisljagic said today the party would not endorse the amendments but ask that the discussion on them be prolonged and the adoption postponed until January.

Josipovic said he would not go into the reasons why the party had changed its mind, adding that the change of heart in the party's prominent members was more interesting. "The HDSSB now thinks I will get mad that, by rejecting the draft amendments, they may have uncovered a secret deal between me and the prime minister. They need not worry, I'm not mad. On the contrary, they made me laugh. I think the whole state is laughing at them."

As for the constitutional amendments, he wished that a full consensus or the required majority were reached on them on a good platform. "I gave my proposals to improve the current, not especially successful draft of the amendments. It's up to parliament to decide," he said.
