Public sector unions unhappy with salaries bill

ZAGREB, Nov 29 (Hina) - Public sector unions said on Friday they were dissatisfied with the work on a bill regulating the salaries of 240,000 employees in the sector.

The bill to be enacted by the New Year will equally regulate the salaries of employees in public administration, schools, hospitals and other public services. Labour Minister Mirando Mrsic said earlier it would ensure the principle "equal salary for equal work."

The unions, however, said the bill failed to indicate the amount of the pay rate.

The only thing clear is that it restricts the remit of the unions' work, they said in a statement, wondering "what the real objective of this law is."

When one adds outsourcing and the ongoing amendments to the Labour Act, "the entire labour force can ask the government, What state are you creating and for whom?"

The bill does not respect salaries, the evaluation of an employee's contribution, the tenets of collective bargaining or the public sector reform, the unions said.

They advised the government against outsourcing, saying it would result in layoffs and lower salaries.
