Parliament initiates constitutional changes

ZAGREB, Oct 25 (Hina) - A parliamentary majority, with the support of the Croatian Democratic Party of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB), on Friday adopted a decision to change the Constitution based on a motion by 48 deputies of the ruling Social Democratic Party (SDP) who want the Constitution to stipulate that there is no statute of limitations on politically motivated first degree murders.

In its opinion on the motion, the government wants the "no statute of limitations" provision to apply to all first degree murders, with which all parliamentary groups agreed, but the strongest opposition Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) insists that murders committed in the name of the former Yugoslav communist regime be specified as one of those crimes with no statute of limitation.

HDZ deputies walked out before the end of today's vote, saying the decision was not adopted in line with procedure.

The Labour Party abstained, so the decision was passed with 89 votes in favour and four against.
