North Kosovo Serbs to run in local elections with one slate

BELGRADE, Sept 4 (Hina) - Serbs from north Kosovo will submit by the end the day a single slate for local elections in Kosovo on November 3, the chief of the Serbian government's office for Kosovo, Aleksandar Vulin, said on Wednesday.

Kosovo Serb representatives will check at the Central Election Commission if the election material is status neutral and if there are Kosovo insignia on the ballots, he told Serbian Radio and Television.

The Serbian side insisted on status neutrality, namely that the election material does not display the logo of the Republic of Kosovo, which was advocated by Kosovo officials. The matter was discussed by the two sides in Brussels, after which the Election Commission decided that the ballots would contain only its symbols.

Only two Serb slates have been submitted to the Commission from central Kosovo, but none from the north, where Serbs make up the majority.

A condition for the formation of a Community of Serb Municipalities, on which Belgrade insists and which is part of a Belgrade-Pristina agreement from April, is the participation of Serbs in the local vote.

Vulin said representatives of four north Kosovo municipalities with a sizeable Serb population easily agreed to take part in the polls. "In order to survive and stay, they must take their destiny in their own hands and this is the only way," he said, expecting a massive turnout.

Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga called local elections for November 3 and slates have to be submitted by midnight today.
