EU membership makes Croatia and Brazil special partners, says FM

ZAGREB, July 2 (Hina) - As a member of the European Union, Croatia is entering a special trade and economic partnership with Latin America and Brazil, one of the world's biggest economies, Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic said on Tuesday.

She was speaking at a press conference with Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, who was visiting Croatia.

Pusic said the potential to develop economic but also political, cultural and scientific relations between the two countries was "enormous."

"Brazil is undergoing a great economic expansion... During his first visit, Minister Patriota will meet with the executives of four Croatian shipyards," she said, adding that Brazil was interested in cooperation in sea gas and oil exploration.

Patriota congratulated Croatia on joining the EU, wishing for his country to be part of this "successful story." He said Brazil-Croatia relations were "promising", notably the development of economic and trade relations.

"With European Union membership, Croatia becomes one of Brazil's strategic partners," he said, confirming that Brazil was interested in Croatian shipyards and wanted to expand trade, notably to agricultural products and the energy sector. Cooperation in science and technology is no less important, he added.

Patriota is the first Brazilian foreign minister to visit Croatia and the first foreign minister to do so since Croatia joined the EU on July 1. He first met with Pusic at an EU-Latin America summit in Brazil in January.

Since he is an ardent football fan, Pusic presented him with a Croatian national team shirt. He invited her to visit Brazil next year.
