EC approves Croatia's first two Cohesion Fund projects

STRASBOURG, July 1 (Hina) - The European Commission on Monday approved the first two projects in Croatia to be financed from the European Union's Cohesion Fund with EUR 102.7 million.

One project envisages an upgrade of the sewer system in Osijek, including the construction of a waste water treatment plant, while the other envisages the construction of four such plants in Porec.

Croatia is now the 28th member and as such will benefit from investments like these to help it on the path of sustainable development. These projects are a good example of our investments in regions which help improve living conditions, while also protecting Croatian rivers and the sea. This is of vital interest for Croatia's tourism, it is an investment in Croatia's economy and the environment, said Regional Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

The two projects cost HRK 139.7 million in total, of which EUR 102.7 million will come from the Cohesion Fund.

The Commission said 150,000 people and about 75,000 tourists annually would benefit from the two projects, which are expected to create 300 jobs. Both are expected to be completed in 2016.

Projects exceeding EUR 50 million have to be approved by the European Commission, while those costing less are approved on the national or regional levels.
