Pack looking forward to Croatia's EU entry more than many Croats

ZAGREB, June 28 (Hina) - European Union Committee on Culture and Education Chair Doris Pack said in Zagreb on Friday she was looking forward to Croatia's EU accession more than many Croats who, she said, seemed to have forgotten how much they wanted accession in the 1990s.

Pack said she could understand that people without a job could not rejoice as they would have a dozen years ago but added that no country, including Germany, could survive alone any more.

She was speaking to the press and cultural employees as part of the first LUX Film Days in Croatia.

The EU is dedicated to diversity. We would like the culture of every country to be visible, that they know, respect and exchange each other, Pack said, adding that negotiations were under way on a new seven-year cultural programme worth EUR 1.8 billion.

The amount has not been approved yet but 55 per cent is expected to be used for the Media Programme and about 30 per cent for non-audiovisual areas, she added.

LUX Film Days are taking place in Zagreb on June 27-30, organised by the European Parliament Information Office in Croatia and Zagreb's Cultural Information Centre. They were opened by the French film "Welcome" and will close with the Italian film "Shun Li and the Poet".
