State-owned power provider ready for competition

ZAGREB, June 18 (Hina) - The state-owned power supplier HEP is not surprised by the competition on the Croatian market, saying on Tuesday it would take part in the competition and offer households various packages.

Speaking on Croatian Radio, HEP CEO Tomislav Seric said the company would reward faithful clients and offer new and various packages.

HEP said it was not surprised by the arrival of the competition because the market had been open since 2008 and very active in the enterprise segment. In 2012 alone, HEP took part in more than 450 tenders.

The foreign providers did not choose this moment to enter the market by accident, because the circumstances are favourable for various calculations, HEP said, adding that it was the only universal service provider for all clients in Croatia.

Under the electricity market law which went into force this past March, the government chooses the providers that have the obligation to provide the public service of power supply as a universal service or as a guaranteed service.

The law stipulates that universal service clients must be supplied with quality electricity which is charged in accordance with tariff methodologies defined by the HERA regulator.

The law also stipulates that all clients are free to choose the electricity supplier and that such a supplier is free to determine the power prices.
