Ex-assistant interior minister's war crimes trial continues

ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - Sasa Lekovic, a journalist who visited Pakracka Poljana a dozen times during the 1991-95 war, said at the war crimes trial of former Assistant Interior Minister Tomislav Mercep on Thursday that despite rumours and subsequent testimonies, he never saw any prison or civilian prisoners there or any people that had any connection to a unit known as Mercep's Men.

Lekovic said members of the reserve police in Pakracka Poljana claimed that Mercep was their commander, even though there were several other operations commanders in the field. He saw Mercep there a couple of times.

Mercep is on trial, as the wartime commander of the reserve police, for the arrest, torture and killing of some 50 civilians from the Zagreb, Kutina and Pakrac areas. He has pleaded not guilty and denied commanding a unit named after him. Contrary to witness depositions, several of Mercep's Men backed his claims, as did several top state officials from that time.

The trial resumes on July 11.
