Josipovic receives European Women's Lobby delegation

ZAGREB, May 31 (Hina) - Croatian President Ivo Josipovic on Friday received a delegation of the European Women's Lobby (EWL), the largest women's network in Europe which works on the promotion of women's rights and gender equality in the European Parliament, and is holding its annual assembly in Zagreb.

The EWL comprises women's associations from the European Union's 27 member states, three candidate countries and 20 European bodies, representing more than 2,000 organisations, combating violence towards women and pushing for 2016 to become the European year to end violence towards women.

President Josipovic supported the EWL's work, stressing the importance of women's equality and of combating violence towards women, which he said was one of the goals of Croatia's policy. He added, however, that there were still examples of discrimination and violence against women in a segment of society.

EWL president Viviane Teitelbaum said 80 EWL delegates from 33 countries were in Zagreb for their annual conference at the initiative of Rada Boric, EWL vice president and national coordinator for Croatia, on the occasion of Croatia's EU accession on July 1.

The conference was being held under Josipovic's auspices.
