US Senator Begich wants special envoy for Balkans

MOSTAR, May 16 (Hina) - The National Federation of Croatian Americans Cultural Foundation (NFCACF) on Thursday endorsed a resolution which Senator Mark Begich sent the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, asking that President Barack Obama appoint a special envoy for the Balkans who would focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina, the NFCACF said in a statement.

Begich, who is of Croatian descent, sent the resolution to the Senate Committee in early May. The special envoy would focus on assessing the implementation of the Dayton peace agreement, which ended the war in Bosnia in 1995, and report to Congress within one year.

The resolution says Croats are the smallest and most vulnerable group in Bosnia and that reforms must not be carried out at their expense.

Citing data from the Catholic Church in Bosnia, that says that the number of Croats dropped from 820,000 before the 1992-95 war to 460,000, adding that this is unacceptable and is reflected in their reduced constitutional rights, because this situation directly causes the country's political and administrative inefficiency.

Begich underlined that the US must restore its influence in the Balkans, notably in Bosnia, so that the Dayton agreement could be considered successful and the country reform in order to draw closer to NATO and European Union membership, said the statement which was also delivered to the Bosnian media.

NFCACF president Bill Vergot said the NFCACF would not forget their fellow Croats in Bosnia until they achieved equality.
