President, parliament speaker meet French, German ministers

ZAGREB, May 13 (Hina) - Croatian President Ivo Josipovic met on Monday with French European Affairs Minister Thierry Repentin and the state minister at the German Foreign Ministry, Michael Link, who said that Croatia would gain in quality by joining the European Union and that it was ready for membership.

Repentin underlined the symbolism of the joint French-German visit and said that EU accession would give Croatia a new quality, while Link is confident that Croatia is well-prepared for membership, which is especially important to Germany, and that it is proving to other membership aspirants by example that reforms can be carried out, Josipovic's office said in a press release.

Repentin and Link, commissioners for German-French cooperation in their parliaments, are officially visiting Croatia.

Josipovic thanked them for the support France and Germany extended Croatia on the road to EU membership, voicing confidence that cooperation would be further strengthened after Croatia joined on July 1.

Speaking of EU enlargement, he reiterated that the EU was not whole and complete without the countries in Southeast Europe, and stressed that Croatia offered its neighbours technical and political support in their EU integration.

Repentin and Link also met with Parliament Speaker Josip Leko, who said Croatia was at a watershed as it was about to become part of the European family, adding that France and Germany had significantly contributed to that with advice as well as political and financial assistance, parliament said in a press release.

Leko said it was in Croatia's interest that all members of the region had the prospect of NATO and EU accession because of stability and peace.

With this visit, we came to express our pleasure that Croatia will be accepted into the EU on July 1 and that Croatian soldiers will join the parade in Paris on July 14 on France's biggest national holiday, said Repentin.

He said Croatia was a positive example to the other countries in the region in terms of reform and welcomed Croatia's responsible approach to its neighbours, highlighting relations with Slovenia.

Repentin and Link told the parliamentary committees on foreign and European affairs that Croatia was expected to take an active part in all important EU political decisions.

In the coming period, Croatia will decide on membership of the eurozone and work on meeting the Schengen requirements, they said.

The meeting with the committees also addressed the Multiannual Financial Framework 2014-20 and possibilities of absorbing European funds.
