Croatia, Serbia sign protocol on border patrols

ZAGREB, May 13 (Hina) - Police directors Vlado Dominic of Croatia and Milorad Veljovic of Serbia on Monday signed a protocol in Batrovci, Serbia on joint patrols along the state border based on a police cooperation agreement, the Croatian Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The signing of the protocol is a reflection of the successful cooperation between the two countries' border police forces.

Dominic said the enforcement of the protocol would make citizens on both sides of the border feel safer and trust the police more.

He said the protocol was also important because of Croatia's upcoming accession to the EU "and taking over the control of the European Union's outer borders."

The ministry said that during his visit to Serbia, Dominic announced that Serb police would take part in the "Safe Tourist Season" campaign this year for the second consecutive year.

The project was launched in 2006 when Croatian police began cooperating with the police forces of European countries whose tourists are the most numerous on Croatia's Adriatic coast. From early July to late August, foreign police patrol the coast with Croatian police with the aim to increase tourist safety.
