Croat party advocates protection of Vojvodina's autonomy

SUBOTICA, May 11 (Hina) - The Democratic Alliance of Croats in Vojvodina (DSHV) has pushed for the adoption of a declaration on the protection of the constitutional and legal rights of the northern Serbian autonomous province of Vojvodina that has been moved by the Democratic Party (DS) in the wake of attacks on Vojvodina's autonomy by nationalist movements and political parties, Croatian-language media in Vojvodina reported on Saturday.

Citing a DSHV statement, the media said this party's presidency assessed that Vojvodina's rights had been endangered for years and that the province's government did not have an active position on the protection of Vojvodina's rights and interests.

The DSHV said the Vojvodina government must not yield to political and media pressures and that it must achieve unity in the province's assembly and adopt the declaration, "regardless of the fact that it is only symbolic and declaratory in character."

In this context, the DSHV pushed for the continuation of cooperation with its coalition partner, the DS.

Despite opposition from Serbian ruling parties and nationalist movements, the declaration will be on the agenda of the Vojvodina parliament on May 20.

The announcement of its adoption recently prompted protests in Novi Sad which called for withdrawing the document and replacing the DS-led provincial government.

The Vojvodina Party has started collecting signatures for the adoption of a new Serbian constitution in which Vojvodina would be given the status of a republic within Serbia.
