Brammertz says UN debate on ICTY was missed opportunity

SARAJEVO, April 15 (Hina) - The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Serge Brammertz, said in Sarajevo on Monday that a recent UN discussion on the ICTY's work represented only a missed opportunity to make a positive impact on reconciliation.

Brammertz conveyed the assessment to Bosnian Presidency members Nebojsa Radmanovic and Bakir Izetbegovic, with whom he met as part of a working visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to a statement released after the closed meeting, Radmanovic and Izetbegovic reiterated that within Bosnia too there were different positions on the impact of the ICTY and its rulings.

"They said some rulings brought unrest to the region and that they would not contribute to reconciliation which, it was said, was good neither for BiH nor for the region," the statement said.

Despite the different views on the ICTY's work, the chief prosecutor said he was pleased with the cooperation with the Bosnian authorities, extending the Hague tribunal's support to Bosnian judicial bodies.

Brammertz is visiting Bosnia as part of preparations for a regular report to the UN Security Council on how the countries in the region cooperate with the ICTY.

Before arriving in Sarajevo, he said he would like Bosnian judicial bodies to be more prompt in dealing with the cases referred by the ICTY.
