Incomplete MEP election result: HDZ coalition has 11,000 more votes than SDP

ZAGREB, April 14 (Hina) - According to incomplete results for Croatian members of the European Parliament released at 11 pm, the coalition led by the opposition Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) has an 11,000-vote lead over the coalition led by the ruling Social Democratic Party (SDP), while the turnout was a little over 20 per cent, Croatia's State Election Commission said.

The HDZ and its partners have won six MEP seats, while the SDP and its partners have won five, out of a total of 12 seats to be designated to Croatia upon its entry into the EU, set for 1 July.

It is still uncertain if the Labour Party will win a seat in the EP, given that the best candidate on the HDZ slate, HSP AS leader Ruza Tomasic, has won about 19,000 more votes than all Labour Party candidates combined.

In Zagreb, which has recorded the highest turnout, about 32 per cent, the SDP coalition leads over the HDZ coalition by about seven per cent. The Labour Party has a little over 6.6 per cent.

The SDP also leads in Split with 41 per cent of the vote, while the HDZ leads in Split-Dalmatia County with 40.84 per cent.

In Rijeka, the SDP has won more than 48 per cent and the HDZ nearly 19 per cent of the vote.

The biggest regional party, the HDSSB, has won the most votes in the city of Osijek, as expected (21.9 per cent), followed by the SDP with 30.54 per cent and the HDZ with 20.99 per cent.
