No obstacles to completing Croatia's EU accession process, says Pusic

ZAGREB, March 15 (Hina) - There are no obstacles to the completion of Croatia's accession to the European Union on July 1, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Vesna Pusic said on Croatian Television on Thursday.

"I see no problem that could come up regarding the ratification (of the accession treaty) and the completion of the process and Croatia's accession to the EU on July 1," she said. "The closer we are to member status, we have an international perception as a country that is stable and that is going towards even more stability."

Pusic dismissed claims that millions of euros had been paid for Croatia's EU accession with a memorandum of understanding between the Croatian and Slovenian governments.

"A solution was found that enables, on the one hand, to agree on a solution to the Ljubljanska Banka issue, and on the other, to separate this issue from the ratification of our accession treaty in Slovenia. I deeply believe... that no solution in which someone was in any way cheated has a chance of surviving in the long term."

Asked which compromise Slovenia had made, Pusic said the lawsuits against Ljubljanska Banka in Croatia were put on hold. Slovenia asked that those proceedings be stopped.

Speaking of elections for the European Parliament, she said citizens' lack of information about the body's role was a universal European problem, especially after the Treaty of Lisbon strengthened the role of the EP and of the national parliaments.

"It's important that people vote in the European elections, that they elect people who have political experience, who know how to and can represent Croatian interests, because they will not represent either the Croatian parliament or government. They are elected directly and represent European interests," said Pusic.
