Bosnia, EC working to ease consequences of Croatia's EU entry

MOSTAR, March 10 (Hina) - The European Commission, together with the Croatian and Bosnian authorities, is seeking a solution to cushion the negative economic consequences of Croatia's upcoming European Union accession on Bosnia and Herzegovina, the European enlargement commissioner's spokesman, Peter Stano, said in an interview with the Bosnian Federation entity's news agency FENA released on Sunday.

In order to cushion the possible negative consequences on Bosnia and its citizens, the Commission, together with Bosnia and Croatia, is seeking a way to facilitate the flow of people and goods between the two countries after Croatia's accession, said Stano.

The Commission is currently working on a regime for the flow of Bosnian goods through the Croatian seaport of Ploce after Croatia joins the EU on July 1, he said, adding that the complex control mechanism in Bosnia did not contribute to the safety of food of plant and animal origin.

Regarding the export of sensitive animal products to the EU, it's important to have a reliable chain of control of food products. The coordination of tasks of state veterinary and food safety offices and inspectorates and laboratories on entity level isn't clear enough to ensure success. If a virus is discovered in meat, it must be possible to find the cause, said Stano.

Croatia's EU accession will have a positive impact on Bosnia if Bosnia focuses on reforms, he said, urging the Bosnian authorities to reform legislation and align it with the EU in order to make political and economic headway.
