Teachers should have reputation, adequate salaries, says Pack

ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - The chair of the European Parliament Committee on Culture and Education, Doris Pack, said in Zagreb on Friday that teachers in Croatia and Europe must have a reputation, meaning that they should be adequately paid to contribute to the attractiveness of a challenging profession.

Many think education is a field they know and can judge, although they know nothing about it or very little, Pack told reporters at Zagreb University's Faculty of Teacher Education.

She said the education and training of teachers in Croatia had not been sufficiently modern because of the difficult war and post-war situation, so it should be modernised, as should be done in other European countries.

The press conference was held as part of day-long international conference, "Transnational Cooperation and the Modernising of Teacher Education in a European Perspective", the closing event of the three-year Tempus IV project "Modernising Teacher Education in a European Perspective" in which 11 universities from seven European countries took part.

The conference was organised by the Centre for European Education, whose presidency member Siegfried Gehrmann told reporters that, according to scholars from Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia, an insufficiently developed European dimension in teacher education was a European problem.

Teacher education in Europe is faced with big challenges resulting from European integration processes, internationalisation and globalisation, so it requires the alignment of national teacher education systems and the strengthening of the international and European dimensions of study programmes, it was said.
