The symposium was organised by the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL), the Adriatic-Balkan Network ICL, the University of Zagreb and Zagreb's office for emergency situations.
The event included a workshop of the Croatian-Japanese project "Risk Identification and Land-Use Planning for Disaster Mitigation of Landslides and Floods in Croatia". The US$ 4 million project is being implemented from 2009 to 2014. Japan has provided equipment and the possibility for Croatian scientists to study in Japan. The Croatian Science and Education Ministry is participating in the project with HRK 1.3 million.
Deputy Mayor of Zagreb Jelena Pavicic Vukicevic said there were more than 800 landslides in the capital, including the biggest one in Croatia, Kostanjek, which is being researched as part of the project, for which the Japanese government has donated HRK 2.5 million.
The event was addressed, among others, by Japanese Ambassador Masaru Tsuji, the Japanese manager of the bilateral project, Hideaki Marui, and ICL executive director Kyoji Sassa.
The project's Croatian manager, Nevenka Ozanic, said task forces for landslides and floods would draw up risk maps to help local administration determine the triggers of such disasters.
