PM says strategic investments bill will prevent blackmail

ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said on Thursday the strategic investments bill envisaged the most transparent model of encouraging and managing investments to date and that it would replace the system in which nearly every "local player" could blackmail an investor far from public view.

He was responding to those criticising the bill, saying they had not studied it enough.

Speaking at a government session, Milanovic said the influence on strategic investments would no longer be dispersed in 50 or 100 places but centralised in one place, accessible and visible to everyone, including any irregularity, manipulation or undesired act.

"Even if it isn't be perfect, we will see that it's not perfect, so the damage created can be corrected at any moment because we can take a step back."

He said that those objecting to this centralised and transparent new model would be able to see what was going on and say, You are selling Croatian assets, forests and rivers.
