Jasenovac Memorial Park slams damaging of Bakotic memorial plaque

ZAGREB, Feb 26 (Hina) - The Jasenovac Memorial Park on Tuesday condemned the damage done to a plaque dedicated to Ante Bakotic, who died leading a prisoner break from the WWII camp, as a message of hatred and belittling of the innocent victims of the Ustasha-led camp.

Bakotic led the break of 1,249 inmates on 22 April 1945, the Park's Council recalled in a statement, adding that more than 83,000 innocent people were killed at Jasenovac, including more than 20,000 children.

The Park's Council expects the police and other state bodies to find and punish "the perpetrator of this terrible anti-democratic and anti-Croatian act."

An unknown perpetrator on Saturday night tried to remove Bakotic's memorial plaque from the house where he was born in Sinj, damaging it in the process.

The act was condemned by the War Veterans Ministry and the Sinj mayor as well.
