MPs urge protecting food, producers

ZAGREB, Feb 13 (Hina) - Parliament on Wednesday discussed four bills whereby Croatian legislation is being aligned with European Union regulations on food protection and protection from chemicals.

The parliamentary groups endorsed a bill on materials which come into contact with food, amendments to the law on detergents, amendments to the regulation on the export and import of dangerous chemicals, and amendments to the law on genetically modified organisms.

Stjepan Milinkovic of the opposition HDZ said there were many problems in the Croatian food industry, notably regarding meat and milk. He mentioned the latest discovery of harmful substances in milk, saying the blame was again being placed "on those who are weakest, our producers." He urged relevant institutions to refrain from unfounded accusations that made the dire situation of farmers even worse.

Petar Cobankovic of the HDZ said it was imperative Croatia remained GMO-free.

Independent MP Damir Kajin said Croatian farmers were losing the battle with the import lobby. Dinko Buric of the HDSSB agreed, saying Croatia imported 40-45 per cent of food, whereas the EU average was eight per cent.
