22nd Croatian Ball opened in Vienna

VIENNA, Feb 10 (Hina) - The traditional 22nd Croatian Ball, organised by the Austrian-Croatian Community for Culture and Sport, was opened in Vienna on Saturday evening, bringing together about 700 Croats who live and work in Austria and their guests from Croatia and Austria.

The Austrian-Croatian Community for Culture and Sport was founded in 1990, coordinating the work of some 20 clubs and two Croat sport leagues in Vienna. It is one of the biggest associations of Croats in Austria which brings together more than 50,000 Croats and Austrians at various annual events, said its president, Miroslav Piplica.

Croatian Ambassador to Austria Gordan Bakota said the Croatian Ball was an important tradition contributing "to the strengthening of ties and the friendship between Croats who live in Vienna, Austrians, as well as Croatia and Austria, which has been constantly supporting Croatia on its road to EU membership, which is envisaged for July 1 this year."

This year's ball is being held under the auspices of Vienna Mayor Michael Haeupl.
