Annual Holocaust seminar for teachers begins

ZAGREB, Jan 28 (Hina) - On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Croatia's Education Agency is holding a seminar on teaching about the Holocaust and prevention of crimes against humanity for primary and secondary school teachers from all over Croatia on January 27-30.

The tenth such seminar was opened in Zagreb on Sunday, with Israeli Ambassador Yosef Amrani attending.

He said that today, 70 years after the Holocaust, one should fight for the truth about that event and the killing of six million people. One cannot live by suppressing that truth, he added.

President Ivo Josipovic's envoy Zrinka Vrabec Mojzes said that many young people who passed through Croatia's education system before 2004 did not learn the truth about the Holocaust because of an insufficiently clear position of the political elites on the Holocaust and attempts to distort or cover up the truth about the evil done in 1941-45 by the then Nazi-styled Independent State of Croatia.

She recalled that the president advocated changing the history textbooks because they did not contain the full truth about World War II.

She said the president recalled many times that the crime against the Jewish people and other victims of the Nazi persecution was the darkest moment of mankind's history and that it must remain in the memory of every people because it reflected the tragedy of every individual, regardless of nation, religion or race.

Speeches were also delivered by Culture Minister Andrea Zlatar Violic and Education Agency director Vinko Filipovic, who commended the cooperation between the Science and Education Ministry, the Culture Ministry, Yad Vashem and the Memorial de la Shoah in organising the seminar on the Holocaust. He added that about 200 teachers had also attended seminars in Israel.
