Albanians pulling down Serb monuments in Kosovo, media say

BELGRADE, Jan 21 (Hina) - Serbian media reported on Monday that dozens of Serb tombstones in several Kosovo villages were desecrated or pulled down and that shots were fired at a monument to the victims of NATO air raids in Gorazdevac after yesterday's removal of a monument commemorating members of the Liberation Army of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja (OVPBM) paramilitary unit in Presevo, south Serbia.

Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic condemned in the strongest terms the desecration of Serb graves and historical monuments in Kosovo, labelling it as "an anti-civilisation act" and warning international forces in Kosovo about their obligation to protect the Serb cultural heritage.

The destruction of monuments and desecration of Orthodox cemeteries were also condemned by Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga, who said this was an unacceptable act "that can't be tolerated."

Albanian parties in Kosovo said such behaviour "causes damage to the processes Kosovo is going through."

At least 80 tombstones have been desecrated in Kosovo, including 50 in Prizren, Serbian Radio and Television reported.

Kosovo police reported that patrols around Serb cultural and religious facilities had been stepped up.

The Serbian government's office for Kosovo and Metohija said that "whenever Pristina threatens to break off dialogue (with Belgrade), violence ensues" and urged the international community to react.

In Djakovica, police prevented Albanians from attacking a Serb monastery.
