In the afternoon, Nikolic was scheduled to talk with other senior Montenegrin officials.
Speaking to the press after their meeting, the two presidents said Montenegro and Serbia had no outstanding issues but that the very good relations could and should be improved.
Asked to comment on the relations between the two countries, which had cooled down after Montenegro declared independence and recognised Kosovo, Vujanovic said former Serbian President Boris Tadic's office operated in a way that was inappropriate for Podgorica-Belgrade relations.
"We had objections to the misunderstanding of Montenegro's European integration policy. We know how difficult our recognition of Kosovo was for Serbia, but we felt that it would become a reality in Belgrade."
Vujanovic said the two countries should build relations that were exemplary not only in the Balkans but globally as well.
Nikolic said Montenegro's independence and recognition of Kosovo's independence had influenced the conduct of Serbia's leadership. "The then leadership wanted to please the people and not run the country. I want to run Serbia, so I say we must have the best possible relations with Montenegro."
Nikolic said he did not come to Montenegro to back Vujanovic's presidential candidacy or the candidate to be nominated by the Serbs in Montenegro, adding that he was leaving this up to the people of Montenegro.
Asked by the press if the status of the Serb Orthodox Church in Montenegro could be considered as an outstanding issue, Nikolic said this did not pose a problem in the relations with Belgrade and that the Church should deal with this issue.
