Foreign direct investments decline

ZAGREB, Jan 15 (Hina) - Foreign direct investment in Croatia in the first nine months of 2012 totalled EUR 452.7 million, half the amount invested in the corresponding period in 2011, the Croatian National Bank said on Tuesday.

Only half of that amount was invested in new projects, mainly real estate, tourism and trade, while no significant investment was made into production.

In 2011, foreign direct investment totalled EUR 1.07 billion, up from only EUR 297.5 million in 2010. A record high EUR 4.2 billion was invested in 2008.

The biggest investors in Croatia in the first nine months of 2012 were Austrian companies with EUR 193 million, followed by Dutch investors with EUR 87.8 million, and Italian and Turkish investors with EUR 81.3 million each.

From 1993 through September 2012, foreign direct investment in Croatia totalled EUR 26.15 billion.

The biggest investor was Austria with EUR 6.5 billon, followed by the Netherlands with EUR 4.04 billion, Germany with EUR 3.06 billion and Hungary with EUR 2.4 billion.

In the said period, EUR 8.8 billion was invested in the banking sector, EUR 2.6 billion in wholesale trade, EUR 1.8 billion in the real estate business, and EUR 1.7 billion in post and telecommunications.
