Minister urges finding solution to air pollution in S. Brod

ZAGREB, Jan 10 (Hina) - Croatian Environmental and Nature Protection Minister Mihael Zmajlovic has ordered stepping up all activities related to solving the issue of air pollution in Slavonski Brod and requested an urgent meeting of the task forces in charge of dealing with the issue.

The ministry said in a statement on Thursday that Zmajlovic also requested, among other things, the signing of a cooperation agreement with Bosnia and Herzegovina to deal with the matter and the setting up of a second measuring station in Slavonski Brod.

The statement recalled that, at Zmajlovic's insistence, a memo was sent to the Bosnian Serb entity's Zoning, Construction and Ecology Ministry requesting that the task forces meet in February and not in March, and inquiring about a measuring station that was to have been set up at the refinery in Bosanski Brod by the end of last year.

The ministry said Croatia approved a draft agreement on cooperation between the Croatian and Bosnian governments in environmental protection and sustainable development and sent it to Bosnia for approval. Croatia expects a response in the week after January 15.

The ministry and the Croatian Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund set aside HRK 2.5 million for setting up a second air quality measuring station in Slavonski Brod, for which two bids were submitted, the statement said.

The ministry went on to say that the data to be collected by the two measuring stations will serve for two projects prepared by Croatia's Meteorological and Hydrological Service to monitor emissions in Croatia and Bosnia, define pollution sources and improve air quality in Slavonski Brod.
