EUROPEAN DELEGATION ARRIVES IN SKOPJE

SKOPJE SKOPJE, March 22 (Hina) - Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, whose country is chairing the European Union, arrived at the head of a European delegation in the Macedonian capital of Skopje on Thursday. Lindh is accompanied by EU's High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, European Commissioner for Foreign Relations Chris Patten and Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel. Solana said he believed the situation in the country was improving, adding he wished he could continue to listen to the silence of weapons. The European officials should meet the highest Macedonian state officials, leaders of the Macedonian Albanian minority and UN officials in Kosovo and international peace forces. Although the situation in Tetovo in the night between Wednesday and Thursday and on Thursday morning was peaceful, after the ultimatum given by the Skopje authorities to Albanian extremists expired, shooting from firearms could be heard coming from Baltepe hill and several villages around Tetovo, which subsided after Macedonian armed forces resolutely returned fire.
