The spot March contract rose to a high of 10.83, just under 10.84 made Oct 18. March settled up 0.21 at 10.77, having ranged from 10.83 to 10.55. May closed 0.17 higher at 10.81, while the back months settled up 0.18 to 0.14. Volume was estimated at 33,375 lots. Dealers said that in addition to speculative buying, trade scale-up selling contributed to the day's brisk volume. They also noted trade selling in the March/May spread. Analysts said today's gains were inspired by the charts, as a lack of physical offtake continues to plague the market. One broker noted the moving averages had crossed to the upside, sending a bullish signal to traders. Follow-through buying is likely Wednesday, based on today's strong close slightly below the day's highs. Resistance was pegged at 11.00 cents in March, a price not seen since the contract climbed to 11.05 on Oct 15. Firm support remained at 10.50. Today, early follow through short covering by the funds gave the market an initial boost, and fresh speculative buying contributed to gains.
