The key March 1997 contract shot up 0.29 cent at the highs, topping out at 10.75 cents before retracing to 10.73 at the close, its highest in nearly three weeks. Traders said short covering by commodity funds accounted for the bulk of the gains, but industry-linked operators were ready sellers at the highs. "The funds were short about 20,000 lots, and they probably covered close to half of that today," said one trader. March ended 0.27 cent a lb higher, at 10.73, while second-position May climbed 0.22 to 10.79. The outer months gained 0.17 to 0.22. Today's rally lifted March futures through key resistance at 10.70 cents, after piercing a nearby objective at 10.50.
