Of the 27,124 bales offered, 8.9 percent was passed in. Japanese and Chinese buyers were principal with support from Taiwanese and Italian operators. In merinos, 19 micron was 2.5 percent dearer, 20/25 0.5 percent dearer, 21/26 one percent dearer, 22 slightly dearer and 23/24 up to 0.5 percent cheaper. Skirtings were one percent dearer. Crossbreds of 27/28/30 microns were one percent dearer and 29/31 0.5 percent dearer. In cardings, lambs were unchanged and locks and crutchings were generally unchanged. But there was some evidence that short-term demand for textiles including carpets had helped to keep up the call for deliveries. The worry was that a stronger sterling and the potential for higher interest rates could lead to a reversal and see import competition gaining ground, some participants said. Topmakers quotations were unchanged to three pence down. New commitments are being treated more cautiously as the general sentiment was one of sitting back and postponing decisions, possibly due to the approach of the Christmas break. 041129 MET dec 96
