Although spot supplies remain tight, analysts said the increased flow of coffee from key producing countries should be able to meet roasters' needs heading into winter, North America's peak consumption period. "Every day that passes more and more coffee comes to the market," said Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka. "And there is more coffee out there." Supply concerns, underscored by a steady decline in consumer coffee inventories, have helped the market trend higher since late September. A late harvest in Central America due to heavy rainfall, coupled with a truckers' strike last month in Colombia, delayed shipments of the new 1996/97 crop to consuming countries. While analysts and traders were reluctant to declare that the uptrend had ended, they said a test of the psychologically key 100.00-cent ($1) a lb mark may not be far off. "There is more room to the downside," said Spilka. "I think prices can gravitate to the 100.00 level." Benchmark March futures slid through key chart support at 112.00 cents early in the session, later falling through the widely-watched 110-cent level for the first time in a week. March ended down 4.25 cents a lb on the day, to 108.85, after ranging from 112.50 to 108.60. Spot December futures fell 3.50 cents a lb, to 117.25, while the remaining months finished 3.05 to 3.55 lower. The day's volume reached an estimated 9,201 lots. 221018 MET nov 96
