Expectations for robust sales were reinforced by market talk of sugar-coated CIS cotton and stronger exports to Brazil. Tuesday, USDA cut Brazil's crop to 1.60 million bales from 1.90 million bales, in its monthly report. The rumors raised hopes that with strong output pegged at 18.594 million 480-lb bales, and ending stocks up to 4.9 million bales, the U.S. could limit supplies through exports. But O.A. Cleveland, a cotton marketing specialist with Mississippi State University, said the market could be setting itself up for a fall. "It may be that this market is showing momentum on ideas of strong exports, but if they're not in the neighborhood of (up to) 250,000 bales, the market may find that to be very bearish," he said. December cotton closed up 0.67 cent at 70.97 cents a lb, traded 71.15 to 70.45. Back months ended flat to 0.55 higher. Volume was estimated at 13,000 lots. Cleveland added that Tuesday's losses were partially the result of the initial market reaction to the USDA report. "This bounce may suggest that this market is not as bottom heavy as the bears seem to think," he said. "Yesterday's low of 70.00 cents may be telling us that (the market) has gone low enough." 141008 MET nov 96
