The buying encountered steady producer selling on the way up in volume estimated at 11,338 lots. One broker said while volume was only moderate, it exceeded Tuesday's tally when the market closed lower. Meanwhile, high open interest of 86,011 lots in March could set the stage for a shortcovering rally should that delivery near 10.70 cents, the broker said. The spot month closed 0.10 firmer at 10.48 after trading from 10.50 to 10.33. Back months settled 0.05 to 0.01 firmer. Prices opened only marginally lower despite weakness in the London white sugar contract. Dealers noted steady buying under the market and interest in the spreads, which stymied follow-through selling. Light stops were triggered below unchanged for March and carried prices through resistance at 10.46. Trade and commission house buying lifted the market to session highs.
