A crop estimate from Sparks was seen as slightly bearish by some traders who added that it may have helped to prompt the fund selling. Sparks forcast a U.S. crop of 18.5 million bales. The USDA's crop estimate is released next Tuesday. Traders said current estimates range from 18.3 to 18.7 million bales. "Sparks did not tell us anything we did not know," said Sharon Johnson of Frank Schneider and Co Inc. Several sell stops were triggered as speculators sold, though floor sources noted that local buying on the lows helpied the market to pare some of its losses. December cotton ended 0.90 cent lower at 71.37 cents a lb, traded 72.05 to 71.10 cents. Volume was heavy at an estimated 14,000 lots versus Tuesday's official 4,654 lots. The market awaited Friday's options expiry. Johnson said the need to sell futures to protect option positions as the market went through 72.00 cents for December may have exacerbated the selloff. 071139 MET nov 96
