A round of fund short covering triggered buy-stops above 118.00 cents a lb in the December contract, lifting prices toward sessions highs, but steady speculative and local selling of the nearby December/March switch cut into gains, traders said. December delivery ended up 0.50 at 117.75, having traded from 119.25 to 117.00. Second position March rose 0.60 cent, to 107.05, narrowing the nearby switch to 10.70 cents. The day's volume was light, at an estimated 4,632 lots. Technically, the December contract continued to find strong resistance at the 120.00 mark, with the next level noted at 123.00. Near-term chart support was seen in the 116.50-115.50 area. The U.S. certified coffee stocks report, due to be released late Monday, was expected to come in little changed, traders said. The certifieds fell 4,036 60-kg bags to just 1,547 bags a week ago, the lowest levels since New York's Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange started tracking inventories in 1980. No coffee was reported pending grading or recertification as of last week, the CSCE said. 051047 MET nov 96
